Moral Decay in America: Will the Election Matter?

The 500th Anniversary of the Reformation will be observed in 2017. The Road to Reformation Seminar presents foundational themes of the 16th Century Reformation and their relevance to the 21st Century. The 2016 Seminar will address the fundamental issues behind today’s moral decay in both the church and secular society and their similarity with conditions in the early 1500’s.

The Two Kingdoms and The Proper Roles of Church and State

Rev. Chris Rosebrough, Kongsvinger Lutheran Church—Oslo, MN

One cannot understand what is driving the moral decline in the United Sates apart from the devastating impact and growth of liberalizing philosophies and skeptical attacks on the authority of scripture from within the walls of the Church. This presentation will focus on what has brought us to this point and how there is no possible way of charting a course that will have any hope of turning the tide without the regenerative power of the Gospel.

Natural Law and The Two Kingdoms

Dr. Korey Maas, Asst. Professor of History, Hillsdale College

The “Two Kingdoms” theology is often recognized as one of the Reformation’s great gifts to the world. However, “natural law” predated the sixteenth century. While many modern Protestants assume that the Reformers did or should have rejected natural law as a relic of Roman Catholicism, this presentation will offer a brief definition and explanation of natural law. It will be shown that the Lutheran Reformers did not reject natural law; rather understood it to be an essential component of their Two Kingdom’s theology. Natural law will be examined in service to the Two Kingdoms.
